چکیده

Both information models and ontologies promise advantages in promoting interoperability. Recent research has shown the benefits of rigorous modelling in assuring largescale consistency. In previous work we have demonstrated the feasibility of remodelling the OpenEHR information ontology using realist ontologies, such as IAO. We here present an OWL version of the care-entry model, showing that many terms contained in clinical archetypes refer to reality rather than to information. Even though not covering the domain of the information model (which deals with record structure, data types, etc.) we have shown that the harmonization of the OpenEHR standard with realist ontologies is feasible. While useful to resolve ambiguities contained in archetype metadata definition, the proposed merged ontology also revealed several modelling inconsistencies on published archetypes. We have also demonstrated that ambiguity in relations and ontological commitment can be improved by rigorous ontological definitions.

An ontological approach to evidence-based medicine and meta-analysis

The "evidence-based medicine" (EBM) paradigm is centered on the concept of "best evidence" and clinical studies based on this approach are more likely to be considered by physicians in their practice. In this paper we describe an ontology representing the concepts involved in evidence-based medicine and meta-analysis and show how an ontological approach can be applied both for revisiting EBM co...

Modeling healthcare authorization and claim submissions using the openEHR dual-model approach

BACKGROUND The TISS standard is a set of mandatory forms and electronic messages for healthcare authorization and claim submissions among healthcare plans and providers in Brazil. It is not based on formal models as the new generation of health informatics standards suggests. The objective of this paper is to model the TISS in terms of the openEHR archetype-based approach and integrate it into ...

Transformation of standardized clinical models based on OWL technologies: from CEM to OpenEHR archetypes

INTRODUCTION The semantic interoperability of electronic healthcare records (EHRs) systems is a major challenge in the medical informatics area. International initiatives pursue the use of semantically interoperable clinical models, and ontologies have frequently been used in semantic interoperability efforts. The objective of this paper is to propose a generic, ontology-based, flexible approac...

The Ontological Level: Revisiting 30 Years of Knowledge Representation

I revisit here the motivations and the main proposal of paper I published at the 1994 Wittgenstein Symposium, entitled “The Ontological Level”, in the light of the main results achieved in the latest 30 years of Knowledge Representation, since the well known “What’s in a link?” paper by Bill Woods. I will argue that, despite the explosion of ontologies, many problems are still there, since ther...

Revisiting the Arabic Diglossic Situation and Highlighting the Socio-Cultural Factors Shaping Language Use in Light of Auer’s (2005) Model

In the field of Arabic sociolinguistics, diglossia has been an interesting linguistic inquiry since it was first discussed by Ferguson in 1959. Since then, diglossia has been discussed, expanded, and revisited by Badawi (1973), Hudson (2002), and Albirini (2016) among others. While the discussion of the Arabic diglossic situation highlights the existence of two separate codes (High and Lo...
